PRODUCTION Argania spinosa L. oil is obtained by crushing the kernels, roasted for obtaining edible oil, or not-roasted if it is for cosmetic use. Kernels are manually collected from original forests of argan trees.
RENOWNED QUALITY This oil is used in the daily lives of Moroccan people, not only as food but also as a cosmetic.
MEDITERRANEAN AREA INVOLVED South-West of Morocco
ECOLOGICAL IMPACT Argania spinosa L. is native of the Moroccan southwest, where it naturally constitutes a biological agent against desertification. Bordered by the High Atlas, by the Anti-Atlas Mountains and by the Atlantic Ocean, the argan-rich forest of Souss-Massa National Park has been designated an UNESCO BIOSPHERE RESERVE in 1998.
SOCIAL IMPACT The product provides a significant source of food and income, especially in rural areas where Berber women and local cooperatives are basically fully employed in kernel collection and oil preparation.
